Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes SPAN Photography unique in the engagement and wedding photography market?
A: We think we have two stand-out qualities that the couples with whom we work appreciate. First, Sean has an eye for nature. Working with us is a little like having a National Geographic freelancer take your photos. Sean's talent for working with landscapes and lighting really enhances your images. (Plus, who doesn't like being regaled with his stories of traipsing through jungles to capture images of jaguars and sunsets?)

We also bring a friendly, authentic, and personal approach to working with couples. Often, clients tell us they felt comfortable in our presence - which made it easier for them to relax, have fun, and be themselves in front of the camera. Of course, it's easy for us to do, since we have incredible people to work with!

Q: What primary photographic style do you identify with?
A: With early training and practice in freelance photography, I [Sean] gravitate toward a photojournalistic approach. I like to get candid shots and anticipate the moments-to-come.

Q: Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?
A: Yes, and although I like to work with natural light whenever possible, I have a wireless flash system that helps illuminate individuals and spaces as needed.

Q: Is your media preference film or digital?
A: Like most folks, today I work in digital. My early photography was film-based, and I think that helps my photography and editing today. Understanding the nuances of developing a photo - as one would in a darkroom - enables me to properly expose images. Film is a very artistic medium!

Q: How many photographers do you work with?
A: I [Sean] am the primary photographer and shoot all booked events. Two additional individuals - including my partner, Marybeth - serve as "second shooters" for large events.

Q: Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?
A: We only shoot one event in a day; each wedding, engagement shoot, or event deserves as much focus as we can provide.

Q: What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?
A: The amount of equipment will vary based on the event or shoot. Some of my equipment includes:

  • Cameras - Canon 1Dx, Canon 5D Mark III; Lenses - Canon 16-36mm F/2.8L II, Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L IS II, Canon 24-105mm F/4L IS, Canon 85mm F/1.2L, Canon 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II
  • Lighting - 3-4 Canon Speedlites with wireless capabilities, 3-4 PocketWizard Radio Transceivers
  • Lightstands, Umbrellas, Battery Packs and misc items

Q: Do you charge hourly or full day?
A: Our rates are determined on an hourly basis. We have packages for weddings listed at http://www.spanphotography.com/wedding-packages.

Q: Do you charge for travel?
A: We do not charge for travel within 60 miles of Loveland, CO. We are absolutely available to cover events beyond our 60-mile range, but the bookings may be subject to additional fees incurred by travel (e.g., mileage, airfare, hotel stays).

Q: How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?
A: Our typical turnaround time is between four and six weeks for a wedding; for smaller events, we can share proofs within a month. Images will be available on private online viewing galleries for family and friends, and we provide clients with discs of high resolution images.

Q: Do you do any retouching?
A: All the images will be post-processed, corrected for color/tone, and edited to prepare them for printing. I don’t drastically change photos but, as necessary, I take out "noise" (e.g., blemishes, gnats, signs).

Q: What kind of albums do you offer?
A: Albums, DVD slideshows, photo guestbooks and other products are available upon request and for additional fees. We do not include these items in our packages in order to allow clients the freedom to work with their preferred companies to design albums and other keepsakes that fit their budgets and needs.
